Words of irrelevance at a time like this

American fashion right now is struggling… I think I understand what [Obama and her advisers] are doing, but I don’t think that’s the right message at this particular point. – Oscar de la Renta, on Michelle Obama’s attire choice at Buckingham Palace.

On this argument, I think I’m going to have to side with Mrs. Obama. What I DON’T think is a right message for the people at this moment in history is to create this hierarchical barrier between you and the country you represent through lavish clothing. Maybe de la Renta is saying this because many high-end designers have seen their sales plummeted and store like J. Crew, also mentioned in this article, are racking in upper-class interest in alternative elegance. But instead of pointing fingers at figures who could be your walking billboard, why not look into your own company and see what changes you as a designer need to do – like adjust your mindboggling price tags to a less enthusiastic economy, especially if sales is really somthing that concerns you.
